Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Re-Opens Markley Street In Norristown One Year Ahead Of Schedule
PennDOT reopened the newly rebuilt, mile-long section of Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) to two-way traffic on September 4th, 2015, in time for Labor Day weekend. Norristown is the County seat for Montgomery County, and Markley Street is a major north-south roadway through the borough. The reopening celebrates the early completion of the $20.8 million road reconstruction project that began in February 2013 and finished one year ahead of schedule. Burns designed new center turn lanes, traffic signals, a rebuilt roadway infrastructure, sidewalks, curbs, utilities, landscaping, and decorative street lighting to further enhance this commercial and residential district.
Matthew Burns PE, President/CEO said “Burns is proud to play an integral role in the early completion of the first phase of the Markley Street Improvement Project. We are pleased to support PennDOT’s efforts to enhance Markley Street and the benefits the project brings to the citizens who live, work, and walk in the Norristown community.” Burns added, “We’re working hard on the design for Phase II, and are looking forward to construction starting in 2017.”
PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said “We are delighted to complete this major transportation improvement project well ahead of schedule and to reopen Markley Street to two-way traffic for travelers who depend upon this key north-south artery for access through Norristown.” Richards concluded the ceremony by thanking the team for making the project a success: “I want to recognize the PennDOT regional staff for the management of this successful effort, Burns Engineering for the design, and the contractor, J.D. Eckman, and its sub-contractors, for their craftsmanship, planning, and execution that enabled physical construction to finish a full year ahead of schedule.”
The two-way traffic pattern will continue until Phase II of the road project begins in early 2017, with anticipated completion in 2019.
