Burns Awarded FTA Project Management Oversight Task with the Long Island Railroad
Burns Engineering has been assigned by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to provide project management oversight for the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), a legacy transit system that is celebrating its 175th anniversary. In this role, Burns will provide management oversight over the next 5 years for a portfolio of projects with a budget of over $470 million. These projects will include a full spectrum of transit initiatives, including facilities, infrastructure, track, communications, signals and traction power, as well as American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) projects.
Specifically, Burns will provide management oversight of this major capital program to determine whether it is on time, within budget, in conformance with the design criteria, constructed to approved plans and specifications, and is efficiently and effectively implemented. One critical project will be the implementation of the Positive Train Control system. This train control system is being rolled out nationwide to further enhance passenger safety, and will be a challenge for the LIRR considering the volume of passengers and the complexity of the system.
