Burns Designing Philadelphia Water Department LEED Certified Maintenance Facility
Burns has been selected to lead the engineering effort for the design of the $12 million West Philadelphia Sewer Maintenance Facility. This 7-acre project site will include a 10,000 sf administrative facility used to stage the Philadelphia Water Department’s (PWD) sewer maintenance team activities, an 8,000 sf vactor truck storage garage, a 4500 sf enclosed materials storage area, a training facility, and vehicle fueling station.
The goal is to develop the project requirements using “Green Building” technologies to achieve LEED certification of the facility. A major goal of the project is to use green technologies such as ground source heat pump utilizing geothermal well-field and in-slab radiant heating. The building envelope type and orientation are also being analyzed to determine the most efficient combination.
PWD is tasked with managing the watershed, and is at the forefront of mitigating the impacts of land development to the watershed and environment. To manage the site storm water, several innovative systems are being developed including: vegetated open detention basin, pervious paving/infiltration basin, and vegetative roofs. Water conserving fixtures and water efficient landscaping will be incorporated into the facility as well to help reduce impact on the environment.
