Automated People Movers

With the recent increase in air travel creating the need for airports with remote terminals, the ability to move passengers in and around airports quickly and efficiently has become a priority.

A new, creative approach to handling a larger volume of air passengers on the ground was necessary for air travel to continue its growth trend.

One increasingly popular transit solution is the use of Automated People Movers (APM) in our nation’s largest airports. APM trains now swiftly transport people from remote parking and rental car sites to terminals, and provide quick comfortable transfers between terminals, allowing airports significantly greater passenger flow, and often, shorter layovers.

While APM systems have been used predominantly at airports, these automated, electric-powered, driverless vehicles both underground and aerial, are also gaining acceptance in urban settings such as Las Vegas.

APM systems have the ability to address many important transportation concerns, while at the same time providing efficient and comfortable solutions to travelers. These benefits include the following:

Time – In addition to offering extremely short headways (as short as 60 seconds), APM’s also cut down on transfer and connecting times, allowing travelers to easily and fluidly move from destination to destination.

Ease – APM systems create a convenient, seamless route for riders. Their high ride quality provides travelers with a smooth, enjoyable experience.

Lowered Costs – APMs offer significantly lower operating expenses than standard rail systems because of their driverless feature. APM propulsion systems also feature the most efficient AC electric drive systems in the industry.

Reliability – APMs offer excellent reliability and safety records, as well as flexibility in operation. The computerized, fully automated central control systems afford highly flexible transit service that quickly adapts to changing passenger load requirements and operating conditions.

With our recent experience in the systems and guideway engineering on large APM projects, Burns is a leader in the growing airport and urban APM marketplace.
