Burns Wins ACEC New York Engineering Excellence Award for Runway Modernization at Stewart International Airport

Stewart International Airport Runway Modernization Project

The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) New York Chapter selected the Stewart International Airport Runway Modernization Project for a Platinum Award in their 2017 Engineering Excellence Awards Competition.

The rehabilitation of Runways 9-27 and 16-34 at Stewart International Airport (Stewart) utilized innovative engineering design to utilize the maximum permitted FAA-certified light emitting diode (LED) fixtures to reduce energy consumption at the airport by over 205 MW/h a year.  This project helped Stewart and The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey:

  • Update aging infrastructure on Runways 9-27 and 16-34 to improve safety and reliability
  • Maximize energy efficiency and reduce operational and maintenance costs through the use of energy-conserving LED airfield lighting
  • Prepare the airport for future passenger growth
  • Create 850 jobs and generate $232 million in economic activity in the Hudson Valley

Engineering Excellence Awards are presented to projects that embody the quality and engineering expertise ACEC New York represents.  Projects are judged on a rigorous set of criteria which includes complexity, innovation, and value to society.  All winners will be honored at the 50th Annual Engineering Excellence Awards Gala in New York City on April 1, 2017.

Burns is proud to have helped Stewart increase air service for future expansion, reduce energy consumption, and improve infrastructure to maintain a modern, efficient airport!
