Burns Designing Rail Systems for NICTD West Lake Corridor

Burns, as a subconsultant to HDR, is performing rail systems design for the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District’s (NICTD) West Lake Corridor project. Burns’ design includes Overhead Catenary Systems (OCS), traction power, signals and communications.

NICTD’s existing South Shore Line (SSL) connects Northwest Indiana to Chicago and Cook County, Illinois. The West Lake Corridor is a new 8-mile branch extension of the SSL route to reach high-growth areas in Lake County, Indiana.  This project will expand NICTD’s service coverage, improve mobility and accessibility, and stimulate local job creation and economic development opportunities for Lake County.

The West Lake Corridor will include four new passenger stations and a maintenance facility. The north end of the line will be elevated over other railroads and highway, while the south end will include numerous highway grade crossings.

Burns is proud to play a role in enhancing public transportation in Northwest Indiana.
