Tamara Nicholson, PMP, was named one of Mass Transit’s 40 under 40 of 2020! This award is an annual recognition noting outstanding individuals under the age of 40 making a difference in the public transit industry.

This year, Mass Transit received a record number of nominations from individuals whose contributions have shown a capacity for innovation, demonstrated leadership, and a commitment to making an impact in transit. The 40 winners were selected based on the criteria of job commitment, industry involvement, and contribution, achievement in his or her position and innovation in his or her field. The evaluation process resulted in a group of young professionals who represent a diverse cross section of skills and disciplines required to make this industry what it is.

When asked about the most challenging part of her position, Tamara said, “The most challenging part of my job is also the most rewarding and that is managing multiple priorities. I am overseeing projects of varying complexity; this means I am constantly switching gears and every day is different. Each call, deliverable, meeting helps me dig deeper into project status/issues and collaborate with stakeholders to advance the project.”

Tamara has not only contributed to the transportation industry through her work at Burns, but also her volunteer work with professional organizations such as the Women Transportation Seminar (WTS), the Transportation YOU Committee and the Engineers Without Boarders international project team.

Tamara works in the Project Management Oversight group at Burns and has played an important role as being our oversight consultant across four federal transit regions and has performed project management oversight for more than 20 projects in various stages of engineering and construction. We are so proud of Tamara’s accomplishments and grateful she is part of our team at Burns. We are excited to see what Tamara continues to achieve in the transit industry and congratulate her on this honor!
