NYU Langone Hospital – Long Island, Central Utility Plant

Burns supported the transformation of various hospital campus utilities, systems and infrastructure.

NYU LHLI is a 511-bed medical and Level 1 Trauma Center. When Hurricane Sandy swept across Long Island, the town of Mineola suffered from widespread power outages. NYU LHLI was forced to rely on back-up generators to power major system facilities.

Taking lessons learned from the storm, hospital officials committed to ensure continuity of full patient and medical services in event of a future power outage. Burns helped NYU LHLI install a new cogeneration, or “combined heat and power,” plant to supplement emergency generators. The existing system was replaced with an integrated central boiler and chiller plant as well as thermal distribution system overhaul. The new cogeneration system was supported with a new, on-site 15-kilovolt (kv) substation.

Burns provided survey, feasibility analysis, utility coordination and logistics planning for the infrastructure upgrade and systems replacement. The new utilities ensure full operational continuity and lower energy costs, resulting in a payback within eight years.
