Clarkson Avenue Medical Complex Microgrid Initiative

The Clarkson Avenue Medical Complex includes an 11-block area and three hospitals: Kingsboro Psychiatric, Downstate Medical Center, and Kings County Hospital, together totaling 1,200 beds, and serving more than 1,000,000 patients per year.

Burns provided the feasibility analyses and detailed engineering to create a resilient microgrid that would keep the three hospitals running in the event of a grid-wide power outage.

The 18 MW microgrid design combines energy efficiency measures, cogeneration, renewable energy coupled with energy storage and smart grid technology to provide independent power to these critical facilities.
