Orlando International Airport, South Terminal Complex

Burns performs all technology and multi-media system specialty engineering for the largest construction project in airport history.

The $2.8-billion South Terminal Complex is a new 1.6-million square feet, world-class terminal anticipated to accommodate an additional 10 million passengers at Orlando International Airport (MCO), already the busiest airport in Florida.

Burns provided low-voltage technology and special systems design engineering for state-of-the art connectivity, air traffic control, and airport security services.

As specialty system design experts, Burns project managers apply proficiency and technology best practices throughout the planning, procurement and implementation phases of a wide range of specialized information technology services. Burns provided design and enhanced construction support for the following:

  • Audio-video and communication technologies,
  • Enhanced passenger processing,
  • Passive Optical Networks and related network infrastructure,
  • Physical and electronic security,
  • Virtual Ramp Control system, and
  • Wi-Fi and radio infrastructure.

The complex will feature an interactive experience that transcends the terminal through video displays, lighting, creative media, landscaping, and other programmable content. The multimedia design showcases the region’s iconic tourist attractions, creates additional advertising revenue opportunities, and achieves GOAA’s goal of enhancing traveler experience.

Another innovation includes use of Passive Optical Network (PON) systems. The fiber-optic network design centralizes network systems into a singular IT/communications room, delivering energy and maintenance cost savings.

In addition, Burns established a test lab and assisted GOAA to investigate and to test performance of new technologies before widespread implementation.

GOAA anticipates the program to complete construction in 2022.

Previous special system design projects include work performed at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport and San Diego International Airport. Other projects performed for GOAA include an MCO airfield lighting assessment.
