Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), Positive Train Control

Burns, as a subconsultant to Ansaldo STS, is performing all wayside design, field testing support and system integration for the implementation of Positive Train Control (PTC) on SEPTA’s regional rail network.

The communications segment includes fiber optic and cellular networking, a 220MHz radio system, and GPS tracking.  As part of this project, track interlockings and switches will be improved or replaced to complement the capabilities of the new signal system. These improvements will significantly enhance service quality and provide a safer, more reliable, and easier to maintain operation.

Burns’ role included:

  • Provision of a Resident Engineer to oversee the final design and field installation
  • Provision of a Systems Integration Engineer to oversee the integration of the major subsystems
  • Design of the PTC system interface with existing equipment at each major control location to include hardware and software modifications
  • Design of transponder layout and messaging for all lines
  • Installation of programs on each individual transponder
  • Development of power calculations for all interlocking control locations and radio hut locations
  • Design of grounding plans for all interlocking control locations and radio hut locations
