New Terminal A at Newark International Airport

To meet forecasted passenger traffic demands, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey planned for the redevelopment of New Terminal A at Newark International Airport. The terminal will house 33 gates for domestic flights. The new development includes headhouse, gate concourses, pedestrian bridge, consolidated rent-a-car, AirTrain, access road, and aircraft apron.

During the design-build procurement phase, Burns provided engineering design as part of the PGAL-led team that developed the indicative design, performance criteria, specifications, and mandatory drawings, followed by proposal review and bid evaluation.  Burns is now serving as technical representative for the Port Authority for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, information technology, security, and structural engineering to oversee the design-build team.  As part of the effort, Burns provides on-site experts at PANYNJ engineering offices to help facilitate design and construction phase services, including requests for information, submittal reviews, change request submissions, and cost estimating.

Burns has collaborated with the design-build team and PANYNJ on major design challenges.  Burns has also provided expertise with BIM coordination reviews at several milestones utilizing Revit and Navisworks software to evaluate model completeness and compliance with PANYNJ BIM standards.

A Burns-led team is providing third-party oversight of the LEEDv3 commissioning of the new terminal on behalf of PANYNJ. The Burns-led team is also auditing the energy model, providing LEED submission oversight, and reviewing the building envelope commissioning process for compliance with project sustainability targets and energy cost savings.
