Pratt Institute, East Hall Boiler and Plaza Renovation Wins Structural Engineering Award

May 21, 2025

Burns’ work on the Pratt Institute’s East Hall Boiler and Plaza Renovation project has been recognized with a 2025 Merit Award from the Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers.

Pratt tasked Burns with leading the structural improvements to the underground central plant’s roof, replacing the plaza’s steel and concrete framing, and strengthening critical support columns while construction of the original design was already underway. The project included creating novel and bespoke solutions for a variety of structural engineering challenges, most of them stemming from the plaza renovation and the multitude of forces impacting a very small roof.

Our designs not only helped Pratt achieve more energy-efficient and emission-free steam production but also supported the creation of an award-winning and artful gathering place for students and faculty to study, connect, and relax. This project reflects the school’s design-forward mission and provides a built environment that incubates creative thinkers who are actively building a better future.

The awards were distributed at a ceremony on May 14. Congratulations to the project team!
