Newark Liberty International Airport Runway 4L-22R Reconstruction

Burns is leading the airfield electrical, lighting, and NAVAIDS systems engineering design for the rehabilitation of Runway 4L-22R at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to maintain the runway in a state of good repair and to extend its useful life.

When the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey need to repair and improve Runway 4L-22R at EWR, they turned to the experienced team at Burns, who had completed similar projects on the runway in 2003 and 2015.

The electrical systems within the limits of the runway rehabilitation were removed, replaced, relocated or adjusted to grade in accordance with the planned paving and grading improvements. These systems include runway and taxiway lighting, runway guard lighting, runway status infrastructure, guidance signs, underground series lighting distribution, underground power, and switchgear style constant current regulators.  Additionally, Burns was requested to provide design services for the replacement of the existing low voltage switchgear power monitoring systems for Switch Houses Nos. 1, 2 & 3.

Other services included weekly in-field engineering observations as requested by PA Project management to ensure conformance of installation.

The project is scheduled to be completed in April 2026.
