Confidential Client, Data Center Harmonic Study

Burns is developing a comprehensive harmonic study for a confidential client’s data center to evaluate power quality, confirm compliance with IEEE 519 standards and assess the potential impact of harmonic distortion on the facility’s infrastructure.

Using SKM modeling software, Burns’ power and utilities team will develop a facility model to analyze harmonics generated by equipment across the facility. Burns will model and analyze harmonic distortion levels at the point of common coupling and review results against applicable standards, specifications, and manufacturer-provided thresholds.

Based on the analysis, Burns will provide mitigation recommendations for any unacceptable distortion levels and coordinate with the client’s selected equipment vendors to model mitigation equipment.

The final report will document the study findings, identify and model harmonic mitigation recommendations, and establish design record of facility compliance with IEEE 519, while also identifying the modeled facility equipment manufacturer’s acceptable harmonic thresholds. All of this work helps ensure a safe and reliable utility grid.
