Port Authority Transit Corporation Celebrates Franklin Square Station Reopening

April 25, 2025

Burns congratulates the Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) on the reopening of Philadelphia’s historic Franklin Square Station.

Originally opened in 1936, the PATCO Highspeed Line’s Franklin Square Station has remained closed for nearly 50 years. Today’s reopening expands transit access between South Jersey and Philadelphia, providing a convenient stop for tourists, residents and commuters.

“The revitalization of this station marks an exciting new chapter. We are proud of the station’s transformation, and we look forward to welcoming both old and new riders to this historic, transformed station,” said PATCO General Manager John Rink.

Burns led the project’s design phase and supported project construction, overseeing station enhancements and accessibility features.

The project required a complex integration of modern, eco-friendly station features within and around century-old infrastructure. Station improvements included a comprehensive range of civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and life safety upgrades, all while ensuring the station would comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The $30-million project was the recipient of New Jersey Alliance for Action’s Leading Infrastructure Projects Award.
