Trenton-Mercer Airport, Airfield Infrastructure Upgrades

As part of a professional on-call services contract, Burns engineers served as long-term advisors and designed the following projects at Trenton Mercer Airport.

The taxiway and airfield pavement improvement program at TTN, the third-busiest airport in New Jersey, brought all airfield pavement up to applicable Group C-III standards for use by air carrier aircraft while maximizing federal funding. The program led to safety improvements by removing airfield taxiway conflicts and hot spots, improving airfield electrical systems and navigational aids, as well as improving the taxiing and queuing experiences of aircraft on the airfield.

Burns’ team was engaged on the following projects:

Rehabilitation of Runway 6-24:

Our team designed and managed construction for milling and overlaying TTN’s primary 150’ x 6,000’ runway. The project also upgraded runway and taxiway edge lights and replaced all signage within the Runway 6-24 safety area.

Rehabilitation of Taxiway G and Reconstruction of Taxiway D:

Our team oversaw design and construction management for both taxiways, including applying new FAA AC requirements for geometry, such as fillet design. TW-G (1,700’) was regraded to meet cross-sectional standards and resurfaced, while TW-D (1,600’) was relocated to meet current RW/TW offset standards, requiring a complete redesign as a new taxiway segment.

Construction of Taxiway D Connector:

Our team designed and led construction management for the completion of the missing link between the recently rehabilitated TW G and TW D. This project involved relocating the airport’s primary wind cone and Supplemental Weather Station (SWS), requiring significant coordination with the FAA and other stakeholders.

Reconstruction of Taxiway F:

Our team provided design and construction management for the relocated 2,550’ TW-F. The design required extensive coordination with airport tenants and geometry development to meet new AC standards for taxiways.
