Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Link US

By increasing rail capacity and reducing idling, the Link US project will transform Los Angeles’ Union Station, improving the speed and efficiency of regional and intercity service, and eliminating the need for through trains to change directions in Los Angeles. The Burns team is supporting the project with railroad signal, communications, and PTC design and engineering.

The project will be delivered in two phases. Phase A will establish initial run-through service by constructing the new track structure, modifying one station platform, and modernizing tracks and signals in the station throat. Phase B will support California High Speed Rail’s access to Los Angles Union Station and complete the transformation by upgrading the remaining platforms, widening the pedestrian underpass, and adding a sixth lead track.

The team worked on the early work for the upgrade of CP Mission and CP Terminal designing the locations from relays to vital processors and performed the in-service testing and cutover of the locations.

For Phase A, Burns prepared the AFC design package for the Amtrak Shoofly early work signal design package for the construction manager/general contractor, 95% Plans for the West Shoofly, Run Through tracks, station platform Customer Information Systems (CIS), fiber optic communications, and PTC communications engineering and design, along with construction phasing plans to support efficient project delivery. The Link US project will transform Los Angeles Union Station from a stub-end terminal into a run-through station, allowing trains to enter from the north and continue south across new tracks over U.S. 101.

The team is currently working on advancing the designs for West Shoofly, Run Through tracks, station CIS and communications systems to 100% and AFC levels, and will support construction with Design Support During Construction (DSDC).

The team also coordinated signal and civil designs for Phase B, helping identify and resolve potential conflicts before construction begins.
