The digital revolution in railway communications will enhance passenger experiences, improve operational efficiencies, and help railways maintain system-wide security. To formalize best practices in “smart railway” systems, the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) has launched Technical Committee 35 – Information and Technology.

Burns’ Director of Right-of-Way & Facilities Clay Payne, PE will serve as the committee’s secretary. Clay looks forward to close collaboration with leaders across the railway industry as well as with Burns’ railroad and transit communications and technology experts.

Subject areas being explored include:

  • Passenger Communication Systems,
  • Automatic Passenger Counting Systems,
  • Employee Self Service Systems,
  • Fare Collection Systems,
  • Safety Systems,
  • Operations Planning and Simulation, and
  • Data Analytics.
