Burn Designs Mechanical Systems for Philadelphia Wastewater Facility

January 30, 2023

Construction is underway on a new Philadelphia Water Department preliminary treatment facility. Once complete, the project will increase system capacity and further improve water quality in the Delaware River and local waterways.

Part of the city’s Green City, Clean Waters program, the new facility allows PWD to divert up to 300-million gallons per day (mgd) of wastewater and stormwater from the city’s combined sewer system.

The project will alleviate a bottleneck at the Northeast Water Pollution Control Plant that — during heavy storms — can result in discharge of partially treated waters directly into local streams and rivers.

Supporting Whitman, Requardt & Associates (WR&A), Burns led design of the facility’s mechanical, plumbing, and fire-protection systems.

Construction is scheduled to complete by 2026.
