Burns Designs Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Microgrid

May 15, 2023

Burns is supporting the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission with development of a solar-powered microgrid.

Serving as the engineer of record, Burns is designing a microgrid at the Western Regional Office in Westmoreland County. A 2-MegaWatt (MW) solar array and 1.2-MW cogeneration unit will provide complete power and heating needs, while enabling the Turnpike Commission to maintain operations in the event of a grid outage.

Burns’ services include:

  • Coordination with the local utility to upgrade the medium-voltage power supply
  • Electrical design of solar arrays, standby power system, and combined heat and power (CHP) system
  • Mechanical designs to integrate the CHP system with existing thermal distribution
  • Consultation on Pennsylvania net metering regulations
  • Construction administration services

Burns is also researching the feasibility of additional distributed energy resources. The Turnpike Commission is planning to install solar photovoltaic (PV) power across the Commonwealth. The new installations would expand power capacity for electric vehicle charging, enhance operational resiliency at critical facilities, and lower the Commission’s utility costs.
