Burns Designs Philadelphia International Airport Lactation Suite

August 17, 2023

Burns congratulates City of Philadelphia on the Department of Aviation’s Restroom Renovation Program’s recent progress — and recognition.

The multi-year, $100-million Philadelphia International Airport program is modernizing 48 restroom sets to create a more inclusive, amenity-rich passenger experience.

Burns led design of the airport’s first built-in lactation suite, located in the Terminal B/C food court. The new suite will provide a convenient, comfortable space for travelers. Features include targeted climate controls, an energy-recovery system, and high-efficiency automated ventilation.

“Finding a clean, quiet, accessible, private space is no small task for mothers,” said U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon at the suite’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. “The new permanent lactation suite is a strong step forward in making our public spaces safer and more accessible.”

Supporting a team led by CDA&I Architecture and Interiors and Kelly Maiello Architects, Burns’ role on the renovation program involved:

  • Mechanical
  • Electrical
  • Plumbing
  • Fire protection
  • Life safety systems
  • Lighting
  • Technology system integration

At this year’s PHL Transportation Building Construction Luncheon, the airport’s Restroom Renovation Program will receive the 2023 March of Dimes Mission Award.
