Burns Leads Systems Engineering for DC Metrorail’s Bethesda Station Mezzanine

November 27, 2023

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is expanding station accessibility ahead of the new Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) Purple Line’s anticipated completion. The 16-mile regional light rail line will be the largest transportation project in the state’s history.

MTA’s long-awaited completion of the Purple Line will involve significant upgrades to four intersecting WMATA Metrorail stations. At Bethesda Station, a new mezzanine will include high-speed elevators, quickly shuttling passengers to a street-level entrance and to the Purple Line’s Bethesda station when service begins in 2026. The mezzanine will provide seamless intermodal access between Metrorail’s Red Line and MTA’s Purple Line.

Supporting KGP Design Studios, Burns developed bridging documents for the Bethesda station transformation’s engineering systems. Burns’ design packages will enable the design-build team to integrate Metrorail mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and related communication and safety systems.
