Burns Leads Technology Innovations at New San Diego International Airport Terminal

January 15, 2021

Burns will contribute our industry-leading expertise in technology systems and innovation to support the San Diego International Airport (SAN) Terminal 1 replacement program.

The new 1.2-million-square-feet Terminal 1 will serve roughly half the passengers arriving at SAN. Among the information technology and communications services offered throughout the terminal, travelers will have access to a wide range of the latest self-service, touchless and multimedia technologies as well as other state-of-the-art airport systems.

Burns will design the Airport Technology Systems for the new terminal and parking facility, including all passenger information, security, operational systems, emerging technologies and network infrastructure.

Unique components of the project scope include:

  • Self-service bag drop, bag recovery, flight rebooking and boarding kiosks.
  • Service robots, building management systems, automatic vehicle identification devices and advanced passenger sensors.
  • Pre-arrival and airport website applications, artwork technology and concession ordering systems.

The $2.265 billion design-build project will be led by a TurnerFlatironGensler consortium.

Burns previously joined Gensler on design projects for Los Angeles International Airport and Pittsburgh International Airport. Burns has also teamed with Turner to perform technology and multi-media systems engineering improvements at Orlando International Airport.

The SAN terminal replacement project further demonstrates Burns’ commitment to aviation clients throughout Southern California.

Since opening our Los Angeles office in 2020, Burns has continued to recruit the country’s leading airport technology systems experts. Together we are delivering many of the largest, most complex terminal and airfield projects across the country.
