Burns Supports Roll Out of Mass Coastal Railroad’s Positive Train Control System

June 29, 2023

Massachusetts Coastal Railroad (Mass Coastal) is implementing Positive Train Control (PTC) on six of the Class III railroad’s freight locomotives.

Mass Coastal operates freight rail service throughout Southeastern Massachusetts and Southern New England along state-owned right of way. The railroad’s new PTC-equipped locomotives will enhance reliability and safety, preventing the risk of train-to-train collisions, over-speed derailments, work zone incursions, and movements through switches left in an incorrect position.

Burns is serving as the owner’s representative, providing Mass Coastal with technical support throughout project design and implementation. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing the design review process
  • Reviewing engineering design submittals
  • Assessing the Advanced Civil Speed Enforcement System (ACSES) onboard interface, communications systems, and onboard Automatic Train Control (ATC) interface designs
  • Reviewing system installation, testing and commissioning strategies
  • Overseeing compliance with relevant federal safety rules and regulations

Burns delivers leading-edge train signals, controls and communications solutions uniquely crafted for operational performance and interagency interoperability.
