Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. The installation adds to the existing smart-energy microgrid solutions at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, already a model in resilient, sustainable energy management.
The peak-shaving 6.4-MegaWatt (MW), 14.8-Megawatt hour (MWh) system charges at times when electricity rates are at their lowest, discharges during days when electricity rates peak, and offers the potential to provide uninterrupted power during an outage event.
The Navy Yard operates its own grid. One of the largest non-military, unregulated electric distribution systems on the East Coast, the 52-MW grid powers the 1,200-acre former military base now serving as a mixed-use commercial, research and industrial campus. The BESS joins an energy-efficient utility system powered by renewable energy, fuel cells and a microgrid.
Burns served as the program manager for the BESS installation, working with Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) to develop the Request for Proposal, to review and analyze proposals, and to provide construction and design phase owner-engineering services. PIDC is owner of both the Navy Yard property and the smart-energy campus grid.
Citizens Energy Corporation, a non-profit project developer, installed the BESS and will also own and operate the system.
