Burns joins Pratt Institute in celebrating their Brooklyn campus’ newly renovated East Hall Plaza.
Burns oversaw the plaza transformation as part of an underground energy plant’s gut renovation. As the engineer of record, Burns led design and installation for the low-carbon thermal energy system’s boiler upgrade as well as the plaza deck overhaul — leading civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing designs.
Transitioning to the new 600-horsepower steam boilers required replacing the central plant’s roof structural system. East Hall Plaza lies directly above the boilers. Pratt seized the opportunity to reimagine the plaza as part of the construction process, creating a new gathering place for students and faculty to study, connect and relax.
Burns coordinated with the landscape architect to bring to life the plaza’s new features, including a steel canopy, seating areas, and tree planters. Together with Burns’ structural designs, the plaza will serve as an enduring amenity in the heart of Pratt’s historic campus.
