Bradley International Airport, Consolidated Rental Car Facility

Burns delivered mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire-protection, telecommunications and security design services for the design-build team.

A major shift in airport accessibility over the past several years is the implementation of consolidated rental car facilities at medium- and large-hub airports. By consolidating services, airports can offer better passenger experience, greater passenger throughput, consolidation of lease space, and a more seamless transition when travelers approach the airport or return from a flight.

Burns supported Conrac Solutions develop a 1.5-million-square-foot complex. The Consolidated Rental Car Facility (ConRAC) features:

• Nearly 2,800 rental car spaces
• 9 car washes
• 36 fueling positions
• 60 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations
• A quick turn-around facility for vehicle cleaning and fueling

Burns is part of the design-build team, delivering 100-percent Issued for Construction documents. Design features include:

• Energy recovery HVAC units
• Elevated electrical distribution capable of handling a large inrush of power consumption
• Full sanitary drainage, domestic water supply, and storm drainage systems
• Wet-pipe, dry-pipe, pre-action and high-pressure sprinkler systems
• 360-degree camera coverage for enhanced security

To meet growing demand for EV chargers, the project team had the forethought to build in additional electrical capacity. Power management within the charger controls optimizes power output to vehicles with the greatest charging need and throttles consumption during peak periods.

The ConRAC and Bradley International Airport’s Ground Transportation Center (GTC) received the Airport Business 2023 Project of the Year in the Parking Category.

The project completed construction in November 2022.
