Clemson University, Lee Hall Plaza Ductbank Relocation

Burns provided engineering design to relocate a medium voltage ductbank for this campus design-bid-build project on Lee Hall Plaza.

Clemson University’s mission to excel in teaching, research, and public service relies on robust infrastructure that supports a comfortable and focused environment for its students, faculty, and staff. Recognizing that resilient power and utility systems are critical to establishing this environment, the University engaged Burns to provide utility relocation design services to facilitate the installation of a pedestrian bridge over Williamson Road, from a new parking structure to the area south of Harris A. Smith and Lee Hall III. This required the relocation of a span of medium voltage ductbank and the corresponding medium voltage circuits and fiber optic cabling.

Burns’ scope included:

  • Detailed engineering design documents including drawings and specifications.
  • Bid phase services to evaluate the submitted Design-Bid-Build submissions and provide input to Clemson for evaluation purposes.
  • Coordination with adjacent projects and design firms.

This project required a two-phase construction approach due to the requirements of minimizing campus electrical outage impacts to buildings and services in the area and the associated lead times of the medium voltage cabling.

Ultimately, this project provided vital connections for a campus that is experiencing an immense amount of growth.
