HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital, Central Energy Plant Replacement

Burns managed design and construction of a chilled water plant conversion, overcoming supply chain disruptions to meet an aggressive project delivery schedule.

HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital is a 392-bed, acute care level II trauma center hospital with a long history of providing the highest level of critical care for the community of Hudson, Florida.

HCA Healthcare engaged Burns to upgrade the hospital’s 4,000-ton chiller plant. The turnkey design/build replacement project converted the 40-year-old plant to a more-efficient variable primary chilled water system.

Burns overcame unprecedented supply chain challenges during the coronavirus pandemic, completing construction and permitting within 14 months.

An efficient phasing plan involved setting up a remote temporary central plant, expediting project delivery. Burns managed construction, preventing hospital operation and patient care interruptions throughout duration of the project.

The chiller plant replacement involved installation of:

  • Variable primary flow (VPF) chilled water system
  • Four water-cooled, magnetic bearing centrifugal chillers and cooling towers
  • Eight variable speed pumps
  • Reverse osmosis make-up water system
  • Upgraded bulk oxygen system in preparation of future public health emergencies

Engineering services included:

  • Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing system design
  • Medical gas system design
  • Construction management
  • Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) regulatory code compliance

The project was completed in April 2023.
