Massachusetts Coastal Railroad, Positive Train Control System, Owner’s Representative

Burns delivers technical support throughout Mass Coastal’s installation of a Positive Train Control (PTC) system.

Mass Coastal operates freight rail service in Southeastern Massachusetts and Southern New England along state-owned right of way. The Class III railroad is installing a new PTC system on six freight locomotives.

PTC improvements will enhance reliability and safety, preventing risks of train-to-train collisions, over-speed derailments, work zone incursions, or movements through switches left in an incorrect position.

Serving as the owner’s representative, Burns’ responsibilities include:

  • Managing the design review process
  • Reviewing engineering design submittals
  • Assessing the Advanced Civil Speed Enforcement System (ACSES) onboard interface, communications systems, and onboard Automatic Train Control (ATC) interface designs
  • Reviewing system installation, testing and commissioning strategies
  • Overseeing compliance with relevant federal safety rules and regulations

From Boston to Washington, D.C., Burns is supporting Northeast Corridor transit systems and railroad operators with maintenance and advancement of PTC and ATC rail safety systems.
