Allegheny County Airport Authority, Pittsburgh International Airport, Terminal Modernization Program

Burns was part of the Gensler + HDR in association with luis vidal + architects team for the Pittsburgh International Airport Terminal Modernization Program (PIT TMP). In addition to improving the passenger experience and advancing the region, the PIT TMP also evokes a sense of Pittsburgh and creates a lasting first impression for visitors.

This new experience is enabled by a new, 635,000 SF terminal addition that consolidates operations including ticketing, baggage claim, a meet-and-greet area, security checkpoint, retail and concessions.

The TMP creates a more efficient and enjoyable experience for anyone coming to, passing through, or departing from PIT and reduces travel and wait times for passengers and their bags by utilizing the latest technology.

Burns was responsible for all aspects of IT/Special Systems/Security/Life Safety systems throughout the design of the program including Concept, Schematic Design (SD), Design Development (DD), Construction Documents (CD), and Construction Administration (CA).

Key highlights include:

A fully integrated Access Control System with over 500 controlled portals and new card readers, designed to work with the existing badging system.

New security infrastructure and communications rooms to support connectivity and system performance.

Burns specifically designed the following systems:

  • Video Information Display Systems

  • Wired & Wireless Networks
  • Cellular & Public Safety DAS
