To ease traffic congestion at the airport and accommodate today’s bigger aircrafts, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reconstructed the runway. The $376 million project repaved the runway with 18-inch concrete over the existing asphalt, and widened it from 150 to 200 feet to make way for new delay-reduction taxiways.
Burns provided engineering of the airfield lighting and electrical systems which were required to accommodate the runway reconstruction. The $40 million electrical package included all new airfield lighting, underground distribution infrastructure, and vault upgrades. Unique elements of the design included detailed construction phasing, customized configuration of runway and taxiway lighting systems to accommodate four operational scenarios and displaced thresholds, pre-purchase specifications for the majority of the electrical materials and NAVAIDs revisions.
