Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, Green Line Subway Surface Tunnel, Communications Based Train Control System Replacement

Burns is leading an overhaul of Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) systems, incorporating state-of-the-art train controls within a critical section of SEPTA’s underground light rail system.

CBTC systems provide constant evaluation of trolley car positions, enhancing system safety, reliability, and efficiency. SEPTA is modernizing CBTC systems along the Route 34 Trolley Tunnel between 13th Street and 40th Street stations.

Burns is leading the design of a complete overhaul to the legacy Green Line Subway Surface Tunnel’s CBTC system. Burns provides SEPTA with subject matter expertise and project management services, guiding the CBTC system overhaul from the planning through design/build stages. Areas of focus include:

  • Staging the system replacement to accommodate integration of the SEPTA Trolley Modernization Program’s new trolley cars
  • Contributing Automatic Train Control and conventional signaling systems expertise
  • Collaborating with SEPTA to define design-bid-build specifications that accommodate SEPTA’s operational requirements

Burns previously served as engineer of record for SEPTA’s installation of a new CBTC on system on the Media/Sharon Hill Line (MSHL).
