Garden City Regional Airport, Terminal Technology Design

Burns led special systems designs, supporting a phased terminal reconstruction for the “Gateway to Kansas.”

Garden City Regional Airport provides commercial and general aviation services for passengers from western Kansas, southeast Colorado, and the Oklahoma-Texas panhandle. To accommodate growing demand — ridership increased nearly 50 percent in recent years — city officials have initiated a phased redevelopment to double the airport’s overall capacity.

The $31-million project involves replacing the circa-1959 terminal with brand new facilities to alleviate congestion within ticketing, screening, and car rental areas. The terminal now features a full-service restaurant, new restrooms, and a multipurpose lounge.

The second phase of construction will add a second departure gate, a jetway to accommodate larger aircraft, and a revamped arrivals area.

Burns supported HNTB throughout the terminal’s design and construction. Serving as the special systems engineer of record, Burns led design, testing and commissioning for the following systems:

  • Information and communication technologies (ICT)
  • Video surveillance and security
  • Access control
  • Information displays
  • Public WiFi
  • Public address

First phase of construction completed in 2023. The second phase is anticipated to finish in 2024.
