Port of Philadelphia (PhilaPort), Tioga Marine Terminal Crane Electrification

Burns serves as the engineer of record on a design-build project to electrify Tioga Marine Terminal’s diesel-operated container cranes.

PhilaPort plans to convert the terminal’s two ship-to-shore gantry cranes to run 100-percent on electric power. The project will improve air quality for surrounding neighborhoods and reduce the terminal’s operating costs. Tioga Marine Terminal is Philadelphia’s largest multi-purpose cargo handling facility.

Supporting Carr and Duff, Burns’ services include:

  • Assessment of electrical capacity
  • Coordination with the electric utility
  • Design of underground ductbanks, branch circuits, low-voltage transformers, and distribution switchboards
  • Mounting of a cable reel, trailing cable guides, and a maintenance platform
  • Design of the cable vault and cable trench
  • Phasing strategy that ensures uninterrupted terminal operations throughout construction

Burns is proud to support PhilaPort advance goals of expanding, modernizing and electrifying the Philadelphia region’s port facilities. Previous projects include upgrades to the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal.
